A scuba diving group is making facemasks from ocean plastic. The CDC has recommended that Americans wear face masks while they’re outside to protect themselves against the coronavirus. This group is stepping up to make sure facemasks are sustainable!

The masks are made by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors in a partnership with Rash’R. Each mask comes with replacement filters and the mask is reusable. The masks are available for pre-order and come in five different designs. The company has reported that they have 15,000 preorders.

Lisa Nicklin, vice president of consumer marketing at PADI Worldwide told CNN, “We are not profiting from this product. We’re very much a heart-and-soul organization. We care about the ocean and our diver community, so we wanted to be able to put our hands on our hearts and say that we’re not profiting off this difficult time. We underestimated how popular they would be. I think (consumers) just felt that it was a great thing to do for the ocean while also buying something that they need.”

And these masks have helped remove and reduce 1,267 pounds of ocean waste so far! There are products you may be using or habits you may have that contribute to plastic Pollution. Learn more about how the use of Teabags, Cotton Swabs, Laundry, Contact Lenses, Glitter and  Sheet Maskspollute our oceans so you can make more informed decisions going forward. There are also numerous simple actions and switches that can help cut plastic out of our lives including, making your own cosmetics, shampoo, toothpaste, soap, household cleaners, using mason jars, reusable bags/bottles/straws, and avoiding microbeads!
