According to reporting in the New York Times, coronavirus cases are quickly increasing around the globe. Over 100,000 new cases are reported around the globe each day. And many new cases are concentrated in densely populated areas in the Middle East, Latin America, South Asia and Africa.

With the coronavirus’ spread hitting large geographic areas in March and April, many places thought they might be spared. Ashish Jha, professor of global health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told the New York Times, “In the early days, people were seeing patterns that were not really there. They were saying that Africa would be spared. But this is a highly idiosyncratic virus, and over time the idiosyncrasy goes away. There is no natural immunity. We are all, humanity-wise, equally susceptible to the virus.”

In Egypt, where President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has spoken out against medical staff that complained about a lack of protective equipment that has killed doctors, the case count continues to rise. Egypt also has the highest death toll in its region, even as Saudi Arabia has three times as many cases.

Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro has also downplayed the threat of coronavirus. “We are sorry for all the dead, but that’s everyone’s destiny,” he said this week.

Scientists believe that the spread of COVID-19, or coronavirus, started at an exotic animal market in Wuhan, China. You can help stop the incidence of viruses like these by signing this petition to ban the wildlife trade.
