Drugmaker Moderna said on May 18th that its coronavirus vaccine appeared safe and stimulated an immune response against the coronavirus. Eight people received two doses of the vaccine in March and results were released to higher Wall Street gains.

Volunteers between the ages of 18 and 55 were the first to be tested with the vaccine, up next are those 55-70 and 71 and over. Moderna said the vaccine is shown to be “generally safe and well tolerated” by its volunteers. The volunteers made antibodies that were able to stop the virus from replicating, according to Moderna. The study does not prove that the vaccine works, but provides a valuable first step in the vaccine process.

Moderna is creating the vaccine in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

“With today’s positive interim Phase 1 data and the positive data in the mouse challenge model, the Moderna team continues to focus on moving as fast as safely possible to start our pivotal Phase 3 study in July and, if successful, file a BLA,” said Stéphane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer at Moderna, in a press release. “We are investing to scale up manufacturing so we can maximize the number of doses we can produce to help protect as many people as we can from SARS-CoV-2.”
