The pandemic is still here. By the middle of August, countries across the world are grappling with the coronavirus, as cases fluctuate. The United States, Brazil, India, and Russia have the highest number of cases in the world.
The United Kingdom announced that it would impose a 14-day quarantine on all visitors from France, a move that was soon reciprocated by France. The list also includes the Netherlands, Malta, Monaco, Aruba, and Turks & Caicos as those countries have also seen surges in cases.
In France, 2,500 new cases were reported two days in a row. Levels of infection were seen mostly in young people but the high volume of cases hasn’t been seen in the country since April. Spain also reported almost 3,000 new cases, its’ highest level since April.
Brazil is now ranked as the country with the second-worst coronavirus outbreak, only the United States has more cases. The country has registered over 3 million cases and has over 105,000 deaths as of August 14. In South America, Peru has the second-highest number of infections in Latin America. The country added over 10,000 cases to the total infections that number over 530,000. Brazil is followed by India and Russia, India has over 2.5 million cases and Russia has reported over 920,000 cases.
In Asia, South Korea is seeing a number of new cases, including identifying 197 new cases to bring the country’s total to 15,515. The new cases are the country’s highest number of single-day cases since March. Japan reported over 1,000 new cases for four days in a row, ending August 16. And in China, 22 new cases were reported on August 16 and 37 asymptomatic cases were reported in the country.
The United States confirmed that it would keep its border restrictions with Mexico and Canada through September 21 in efforts to quell the coronavirus. Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf announced, “We continue to work with our Canadian and Mexican partners to slow the spread of #COVID19. Accordingly, we have agreed to extend the limitation of non-essential travel at our shared land ports of entry through September 21.”
