Both Germany and the United Kingdom are moving forward on clinical trial plans as they continue to develop coronavirus vaccines.
In Germany, the German Federal Institute for Vaccines has given the green light for clinical testing of a coronavirus vaccine. 200 people between 18-55 will receive doses of the vaccine to test the efficacy and then trials will begin at later stages for higher-risk people. Biontech is the company behind the vaccine. It’s the fourth coronavirus vaccine candidate globally to be approved for testing.
The Sun reported that the UK will begin trials for a coronavirus vaccine in June at Imperial College London. Team leader Dr. Robin Shattock reported that animal tests were already successful and that the lab was promised £22.5million from the UK’s health secretary. Imperial College London and Oxford University are each working on a vaccine for the coronavirus, with trials to begin as soon as possible for each organization.
Of the benefit of both organizations working on a vaccine, Dr. Shattock said, “Why it’s good to have both approaches is that there are many risks of failure along the way. So by having two approaches we increase the chances of having an effective vaccine in the UK. And both these approaches could have complementary activity and so they could eventually be combined if we need to have a prime and boost to make an even more effective vaccine for certain populations.”
