Elizabeth Grant, a 56-year-old resident of Jackson Heights, Queens, faces an 88-count indictment including charges of animal cruelty and criminal contempt. The indictment follows allegations that Grant maintained over 20 dogs and cats in appalling conditions in her two-story home.
Authorities discovered the animals living in squalid environments with feces and urine covering the floors. Tragically, three cats were found dead. The living animals were deprived of clean water and exposed to an overwhelming odor of ammonia, making the space nearly unbearable. Police and animal welfare workers encountered flies, clutter, and extensive damage to the property during a search conducted in May.
Veterinary examinations revealed severe neglect among the rescued pets. Notably, a Shih Tzu mix was found extremely underweight, with matted fur and severe health issues, while another Shih Tzu suffered from dehydration, emaciation, and blindness in one eye.
The unsanitary conditions in Grant’s home, including rotting ceilings and broken stairs, posed significant health risks and exacerbated the animals’ suffering. The case has drawn attention to the severe implications of animal hoarding and its impact on both animals and community resources. Following her arraignment, Grant is scheduled to return to court in September. If convicted, she could face up to two years in prison. The animals have since been transferred to the ASPCA’s Animal Recovery Center in Manhattan for treatment and many have been adopted.
