During the Covid-19 pandemic, many Americans welcomed new pets into their homes. However, as pet ownership grew, so did the cost of veterinary care. One significant factor driving these rising costs is the increasing influence of private equity firms in the veterinary industry.
Recent investigations have revealed that private equity firms now own nearly 30 percent of veterinary practices across the United States. One of the most prominent players in this space is JAB Holding Company, a German-owned firm that has rapidly acquired a large number of specialty and emergency veterinary hospitals. This trend has raised concerns among policymakers, including Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who are now calling for greater scrutiny of JAB’s business practices.
Warren and Blumenthal argue that the consolidation of veterinary services under private equity ownership is leading to higher costs for pet parents, while also compromising the quality of care. They have noted that veterinarians working in these corporate-owned practices often face increased pressure to upsell services and meet revenue targets, which can detract from the overall care provided to pets.
Additionally, JAB’s vertical integration strategy—where they own both veterinary clinics and pet insurance companies—could potentially create conflicts of interest, as the firm may prioritize its own insurance brands in the clinics it owns. The senators have requested detailed information from JAB regarding their acquisitions, revenue, pricing, and employment practices within the veterinary sector, aiming to ensure transparency and protect consumers from unfair practices.
