A 35-year-old man from Grass Valley, California, is facing serious animal cruelty charges after law enforcement officers seized a total of 49 animals from a unit he was operating. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office reported that the man was arrested twice within three days in connection with these allegations.
The first arrest occurred on August 6, when deputies responded to a report of multiple animals escaping from a business unit within the Alta Sierra Business Park. Inside the unit, they discovered a variety of animals, including snakes, reptiles, rabbits, birds, cats, and dogs, all kept in deplorable conditions. Many of the animals were found in small, filthy cages without access to food or water. The unit was filled with a strong odor of ammonia, with no proper ventilation, exacerbating the already dire situation.
Two dogs initially given to a neighbor for care were later found back in the suspect’s possession, once again deprived of basic necessities. This discovery led to the man’s second arrest and he was subsequently booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.
Authorities have expressed concern over the neglect and cruelty these animals endured, as the man had no permit and no proper facilities to care for them. The suspect had claimed he intended to start a reptile business, but the operation was not officially running at the time of the arrests.
The seized animals are now in the custody of animal control, receiving the care they desperately need. The case highlights the critical importance of proper animal care and the consequences of failing to provide it.
