Former Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs has been convicted of animal cruelty charges in Alabama. Tuscaloosa County court records reveal that Buggs was arrested in May and faced two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. On July 19, Buggs was sentenced to 365 days of hard labor in Tuscaloosa County. However, he will only serve 60 days, starting from July 16, 2024, as the court credited him for time already served. The remaining 300 days of his sentence have been suspended for two years, contingent on his good behavior.
The court has also prohibited Buggs from possessing firearms or owning dogs or cats. Although he did not plead guilty, Buggs allowed the court to find him guilty based on stipulated facts, enabling him to appeal for a jury trial. His attorney, Greg Gambril, confirmed that Buggs was released on bond and is seeking a future trial.
Buggs, who has denied the allegations, also faces a domestic violence charge stemming from a June arrest. This case is set for a preliminary hearing in August. His agent, Trey Robinson, claims Buggs is being unfairly targeted due to his ownership of a hookah lounge in Tuscaloosa.
Buggs, drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, has been a member of several NFL teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders and Detroit Lions. He joined the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad and received a Super Bowl LVIII ring earlier this year. Buggs is currently a free agent.
