Mabel, a blind cat once abandoned at the Greenville Humane Society in South Carolina, has become a symbol of hope despite her bumpy road to adoption. Formerly known as Elena, this three-month-old kitten arrived at the shelter terrified, blind in both eyes and struggling to cope with her surroundings. Despite her challenges, she was adopted after her story was shared, bringing joy to the shelter staff.
However, just months later, in late July, Mabel was heartbreakingly returned, left in a box on the shelter’s doorstep with no explanation. Upon her return, the shelter discovered that in addition to her blindness, Mabel had developed Hydrocephalus, a condition causing fluid buildup in the brain. Despite this, the staff were determined to help her find her way.
Renamed Mabel, she began to adapt to her environment, guided by the love and Support of the other cats in the cattery. Her newfound strength and resilience captured the hearts of many when her story was shared online. Miraculously, within hours of the post, Mabel was adopted by a family ready to give her the care and love she deserves.
Mabel’s story sheds light on the realities of animal welfare. The Greenville Humane Society frequently encounters situations like Mabel’s, where pets are abandoned with no notice. The shelter continues to work tirelessly, educating the community and offering resources to prevent such heartbreaking occurrences.
