Artificial intelligence could become one of the most powerful tools in the fight against Climate change—if used wisely. A new study by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and Systemiq, published in npj Climate Action, found that applying AI in energy, transport, and food systems could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 3.2 to 5.4 billion tonnes of CO₂-equivalent annually by 2035.

According to the researchers, AI has the potential to optimize complex systems and reshape the way we manage power grids, transport logistics, and food production. For example, AI could increase the efficiency of wind and solar power systems by up to 20% and significantly boost the adoption of alternative proteins—cutting emissions from livestock farming.

Even with the rising energy use of data centres, the study finds that the benefits of AI far outweigh its own carbon footprint. Beyond emissions cuts, AI can also help predict climate risks, improve early warning systems for disasters like floods and wildfires, and Support smarter investments in low-carbon infrastructure—especially in vulnerable regions where data is limited.

But the report warns that without targeted public policies, commercial interests could drive AI into less socially beneficial areas. Governments and institutions must step up to ensure equitable access to AI tools, especially in the Global South, where AI could unlock massive gains in clean development.

Nicholas Stern, Chair of the Grantham Institute, says we have “an unprecedented opportunity” to harness AI as a climate solution—but only if we act fast and with purpose.

If AI is used to Support sustainability instead of more overconsumption, it could become a true climate ally. Let’s push for tech that empowers people and protects the planet—not just profits.
