Launching a rocket from a rocket launcher in the fields. Concept: war in Ukraine, missile attack, Russian nuclear threat.

For years, Climate change has been held up as humanity’s greatest self-made threat. But according to author and environmentalist Mark Lynas, there’s another danger that could wipe out civilisation even faster: nuclear war. In his new book Six Minutes to Winter, Lynas argues that the risk of a global thermonuclear conflict is more urgent and devastating than many realise.

As reported in The Guardian, Lynas explains that roughly 4,000 nuclear weapons are currently primed for a first strike. A full-scale nuclear exchange would not only kill hundreds of millions in an instant—it could spark a global nuclear winter. Soot from burning cities would rise into the stratosphere, blocking sunlight and halting photosynthesis. Temperatures would plunge below freezing, and farming would collapse. Within a decade, most life on Earth could be gone.

And it’s not just theory. The world has come dangerously close to nuclear war more than once, often due to accidents or false alarms. With tensions rising among nuclear-armed states—including Russia, the U.S., China, and potentially Iran—Lynas believes the odds are more frightening than ever.

While he still supports action on Climate change, Lynas now urges a renewed global movement to address nuclear disarmament. He calls for broad, politically diverse activism—not just the old “peace camp” of the Cold War era—and even suggests prosecuting leaders in nuclear-armed countries as war criminals if they threaten global safety.

This is a wake-up call for environmental and justice advocates alike. We can’t afford to ignore the twin threats of climate collapse and nuclear catastrophe. Let’s use our voices, votes, and platforms to push for peace, de-escalation, and an end to all weapons that could destroy life on Earth in minutes.
