U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is working with the White House to provide more economic relief for Americans suffering economically from the coronavirus pandemic. According to Reuters, Pelosi said that Steven Mnuchin called her to ask Congress for more money for small businesses.

Small businesses are strapped as people stay home under government orders and restaurants, bars, retail stors and millions of small businesses close to help stem the spread of coronavirus. In an interview on CNN, Pelosi said, “We want to make sure the program is administered in a way that does not solidify inequality in how people have access to capital, but instead, benefit to everyone who qualifies.”

The White House requested $250 billion emergency funds to help with coronavirus, following last month’s $2 trillion stimulus package. Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a joint statement that $125 billion of that should be directed at underserved businesses having trouble securing loans.

Democrats are calling for at least $500 billion for small businesses, hospitals, states and food assistance programs for Americans. “After we pass this interim emergency legislation, Congress will move to pass a CARES 2 Act that will extend and expand the bipartisan CARES Act to meet the needs of the American people. CARES 2 must provide transformational relief as the American people weather this assault on their lives and livelihoods,” said the joint statement.

The $2 trillion aid package included small business loans, increased unemployment benefits, healthcare funding and grants for corporations and states.
