Often, when you go walking around grocery stores, supermarkets, or even your favorite coffee shop, you see lip balm everywhere made with poor quality ingredients, parabens, and hard-to-pronounce ingredients that appear to be safe, but clearly you know better. These balms don’t last long, and sometimes cost a ton just for one small tube. To keep your lips nice and soft, you need a solution, but those chemical-laden balms are not the answer. As colder months are approaching, you have to take the health of your lips into consideration. No one appreciates cracked, chapped, or just painfully dry lips especially when wind is rushing by them, making the situation even worse. We want you to never be in dire need of a solution to chapped lips, so read on!
1. DIY Coconut Oil Lip Balm
The easiest solution to cracked, chapped lips is to make your own lip balm, preferably with coconut oil that will stabilize at room temperatures and also provide healing benefits. If you make your own, you have more control of quality, and you can be sure that no toxic ingredients go into your lip balm. Well, go ahead and use some castor oil but be warned, it definitely won’t taste as good!
2. Exfoliate with a Toothbrush
An important step to keep your lips nice and soft is to exfoliate them once in a while. If you use a clean toothbrush, you can easily lift dry skin from your lips, revealing a fresh layer of skin.
3. Cucumber Slices
If you don’t have any oil to slather on your lips, use some of those cucumbers in the fridge. Just like you can do with your eyes, you can slice up some cucumber slices and rub them over your lips for a refreshing feeling that also provides moisture and nutrients.
4. Lemon and Honey
Mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of raw honey together with ½ teaspoon of castor oil for a mini facial for your lips. Apply this mixture onto the lips before going to bed daily, and repeat this for about ten days or until you start seeing results.
5. Flax Seed Oil
With its wealth of fatty acids, flax seed oil is the ideal oil to slather on your lips. It’s the next best thing to coconut oil, though flax seed oil deserves a spot on your bathroom counter even beside the coconut oil. You can put this oil directly on your lips, or you can mix it into your homemade lip balm; either way, you’ll see great results in no time.
You should never have to face dry, chapped, or cracked lips because with these tips, your lips will stay as smooth and soft as can be. These five healthy food-based tips are quick and easy to use, and you probably already have the ingredients sitting in your cupboard or in the deep crevasses of your fridge somewhere.
Additionally, these ingredients can do double duty at the kitchen table, meaning that you can keep your lips happy while concocting amazing recipes with these same ingredients.
