Because of its low cost of production, palm oil is one of the most widely used vegetable oils in food, cleaning, and personal care products. Thus, even if you haven’t heard of it, you’ve definitely purchased a product with it at some point. It’s nearly impossible to not. Sadly, palm oil comes at a large cost to local communities, the environment, and animals.
The palm oil industry has been found guilty of various human rights abuses, including using child labor, ransacking villages, and sexually abusing as well as threatening workers on the plantations. Palm oil-driven deforestation, releases thousands of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, threatens Earth’s biodiversity, and pushes animals, like the Borneo elephant, and the Sumatran tiger, closer and closer to extinction. One of the animals that is most-threatened by palm oil production is orangutans. Many are killed by poachers, injured by the fires set to clear the forests, or taken ot be sold as pets.
Despite the terrible cruelty that the production of palm oil involves, many companies continue to use it – even ones that are vegan. Earth Balance is a dairy-free butter that many people use to avoid causing needless harm to cows and other animals. Sadly, this choice is not entirely cruelty-free because they use palm oil. The company claims to use “ethically-sourced palm oil,” but investigations have found that applying the label sustainable, ethical, or eco-friendly to palm oil is basically meaningless. Greenpeace International released a report, Burning down the house, revealing that companies who are members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) have sourced their palm oil from producers that are tied to the fires in Indonesia.
Avoiding palm oil is a great step, but we also need to place the responsibility on large corporations and put pressure on them to stop using palm oil! Sign this petition to tell Earth Balance to stop using palm oil now!
