The US beef industry is on a mission to downplay the environmental impacts of its production, training thousands of influencers and citizen activists to spread a misleading message about beef sustainability. These advocates, educated through the industry-sponsored Masters of Beef Advocacy (MBA) program, are part of a larger public relations effort to counter criticisms of beef’s role in Climate change.
A study published in Science reveals that each kilogram of beef consumed contributes a staggering 99.5 kgs of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gases to the environment, making it the most climate-damaging food studied. Beef consumption is 2.5 times worse for the climate than sheep and lamb, over seven times worse than farmed fish, and a whopping 21 times worse than eggs. Compared to plant-based foods, these figures skyrocket, with beef production contributing 22 times more to the climate crisis than rice and 63 times more than wheat.
Despite these facts, the beef industry is working hard to sow confusion about the impacts of animal agriculture. The industry aims to convince us that dietary change has no role in combating Climate change through blog posts, videos, educational assets, TV ads, and social media campaigns.

But we can’t afford to ignore the truth any longer. As global beef consumption is predicted to rise, we must take action to prevent irreversible damage to our planet. The key lies in making informed diet decisions.
So, let’s challenge Big Beef’s misinformation campaign by making conscious choices and advocating for a greener future. Remember, it’s not just about reducing meat consumption; it’s about preserving our planet for future generations. Start by sharing this article with your friends and family, and together, let’s clear the air on beef’s impact on Climate change.
The world’s obsession with beef, pork, and processed chicken has reached a tipping point. The livestock sector is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector combined. The UK just set a goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, insisting less meat consumption is key. By reducing the number of animal products we use, a radical shift in Climate change can be achieved. See how often you can substitute plant-based ingredients for meat and dairy.
