A Michigan animal shelter recently received hundreds of parakeets. The son of a hoarder called the shelter to say that he was dropping off 60 to 80 parakeets. Instead, he turned up with 497 parakeets, all shoved into cages and in need of immediate care.
The brightly colored birds were crammed into 7 cages, leaving very little room for them to move, let alone eat or drink. They were immediately given better quarters and were fed bird food that had been donated to the animal shelter.
After the initial drop-off, the man returned with 339 more parakeets in cardboard boxes. This second surrender brought the total to 836.
Owning birds as pets is already tricky and can quickly become an inhumane environment. This is especially if the bird is not rescued from a reputable shelter since the bird trade is extremely cruel and inhumane. To have this many birds and treat them so poorly takes the abuse to a whole new level.
Once recovered, the birds will be put up for adoption and finally get homes where they are loved and cared for. The adoptions will likely begin around January 23. In the meantime, you can Donate to DAWG, Jojos Flying Friends, Birds and Beaks, and East Michigan Bird Rescue.
