Recent sightings of three generations of wild beavers in River Avon are very significant for the beaver population, according to scientists. Wild beavers are endangered and often require human assistance to survive.

The family, which included three kits, is the first beaver family spotted in the last 400 years to have established itself.

Amy Coulthard, director of nature’s recovery at Avon Wildlife Trust, said, “Beavers are a keystone species, and they have an extraordinary ability to change habitats to suit their needs while creating ecosystems for other species to thrive. The presence of this beaver population will Support other wildlife and help us to tackle the ecological emergency.”

Since the early 2000s, Conservation trials have been trying to reintroduce beavers across the UK to replenish the nearly extinct populations in the wild. Wild beavers are considered to be important as they improve biodiversity and their dams create a natural method of controlling floods. According to a five-year scientific study, they also help to improve water quality.

The benefits of a wild beaver population prove that they are not the pests that many believe them to be. Like every part of nature, they serve a purpose and deserve to be preserved and protected.

This new beaver family shows hope for the beaver populations in the UK, as they might be capable of replenishing their own population.
