Bullfighting is such an incredibly cruel and gruesome form of “entertainment” that sometimes it’s easy to forget that it still goes on today. The “sport” involves mentally and physically torturing bulls for a few days before the match. Then, they are released into a ring, often drugged and physically impaired with Vaseline in their eyes or cotton in their nose, to be brutally killed. They have no chance against the picadors and matadors who will stab the bulls with 8-inch blades multiple times before stabbing the bull in the heart.
It’s shocking that some people can find enjoyment in watching and partaking in this ruthless murder of innocent bulls that sounds like it comes directly out of a horror film. In fact, most people don’t support bullfighting and are against its continued existence. Sadly, despite public disapproval, bullfighting continues.
According to The Connexion, the Société Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) recently brought several figures tied to bullfighting in the region of Nîmes to court for animal cruelty. However, the judges stated that the animal cruelty law “does not apply to bullfighting in cases where local traditions might be disrupted” and thus, ruled in favor of bullfighting. While the judges acknowledged the cruelty and suffering that is inherent to bullfighting, they decided that preserving the tradition is more important.
“Entertainment” and “tradition” are not sufficient reasons to permit the suffering of a sentient being – ever. Besides, a majority of the public doesn’t even support the tradition. Sign this petition to ban all bullfighting in the country of France!
