Mercy for Animals has just launched a new initiative to help factory farmers. The new campaign, called The Transfarmation Project, is providing resources to factory farmers looking for new careers in plant-based markets.
Industrial agriculture is one of the most unsustainable practices of modern civilization. From start to finish, factory farming is responsible for the abuse of land, animals, and natural resources all for the express purpose of providing cheap, unhealthy food to large amounts of people. Factory farms are also known for various workplace violations, injuries and child labor.
Mercy for Animals’s mission is to, “construct a compassionate food system by reducing suffering and ending exploitation of animals for food.” This new project is hoping to use expertise of existing farmers for other plant-based operations. The Transfarmation Project works with them to grow crops for plant-based products.
The first featured transformation of the Transfarmation Project is a farmer named Mike Weaver. Weaver was a contract chicken farmer who became concerned about farming treatment of chickens. He has now switched to farming industrial hemp. This switch provides him more money and creates more jobs in his West Virginia town.
Mercy for Animals’ President Leah Garces told the Atlantic of the new venture, “I will freely admit this is an experiment for the animals. But I want to find out this answer: Is there a way out? Can we build a replicable economic model? The narrative right now is that animal-rights activists come into rural America and want to destroy the livelihood and take away jobs. And that is not [correct]. The [real] narrative is that the meat industry is preying on rural America and taking away farmers’ freedom.”
As plant-based foods continue to grow in popularity, the Transfarmation Project is hoping to be a major supplier to producers. Estimates put the plant-based food market at $85 billion by 2030. That’s a lot of economic opportunity.
