In the past few years, more people have been raising awareness about ocean pollution and taking steps to reduce its negative impact by using less single-use plastics. This is amazing and should be celebrated; however, it’s also important to remember that the majority of large plastic pollution in the ocean comes from abandoned fishing gear. Every year, more than 640,000 tons of commercial fishing equipment are discarded in the sea. Animals often get entangled, which can prevent them from swimming, eating, and surviving. No longer supporting the commercial fishing industry by taking fish off of our plates is one of the best ways to help save marine animals. But what about all of the nets that are already in the ocean and the animals that get caught in them?
Fortunately, some incredible individuals are willing to help entangled animals and clean up the ocean. Captain Abdula, for example, was sailing in the Maldives when he noticed a sea turtle that was caught in a huge abandoned fishing net. Knowing the turtle wouldn’t be able to go on much longer if he didn’t help, Abdula dove in and caught the turtle so his team could cut the net off and take it out of the ocean.
After being freed, the turtle swam away with amazing speed! It was such a beautiful moment, and we’re so glad that this turtle was able to live life no longer hindered by the ghost net.
