Coffee giant, Starbucks, is taking on the next step to combat climate change and will be moving away from single-use plastic. Although the company doesn’t know exactly how they will do this yet, they are exploring options.

In 2018, the company announced it would eliminate single-use straws in company-operated stores and since then, they have been setting new goals to move towards being a more sustainable company.
The company is beginning reusable cup programs where customers will be able to use their own cups in every single store in the United States and Canada. Some potential programs could include paying a “deposit” on a cup and returning it after use.
Most stores already offer 10 cent discount if you bring your own cup but the company is considering upping that to 50 cents to encourage consumers to reuse. They are also considering a 10 cent charge for a single-use fee.
Last year, Starbucks began testing out some of their ideas in a handful of trial stores in Seattle. They allowed customers to order with reusable cups for a $1 deposit. When the customer returned the cup, they got the dollar back, along with points towards the reward program.
According to the company, they serve 60 million customers each week, so you can imagine how much plastic the company uses and it’s great that they are actually working towards doing better. The company’s goal is to reduce waste by 50 percent by 2030 and will continue to test many programs that could help get them to this in the following years.
