An environmental charity found that Christmas sweaters are full of plastic. Hubbub, the UK-based charity, analyzed 108 sweaters and found that 95% were fully made from plastic materials, or included plastic. Acrylic is a popular material for Christmas sweaters, 44% were made entirely from acrylic.
Plastic in clothing leads to it getting into oceans. Studies have shown that plastic from clothing in the wash releases hundreds of thousands of microfibers into the water systems. Hubbub said that the Christmas sweater is adding to ocean Pollution.
The charity has estimated that UK consumers will purchase 12 million sweaters this season, with two in five sweaters being worn only once. According to the charity, UK consumers already own 65 million sweaters.
Sarah Divall, project coordinator at Hubbub told the Guardian, “We don’t want to stop people dressing up and having a great time at Christmas but there are so many ways to do this without buying new. Fast fashion is a major threat to the natural world and Christmas jumpers are problematic as so many contain plastic. We’d urge people to swap, buy secondhand or rewear, and remember a jumper is for life not just for Christmas.”
Fast fashion is an increasing problem around the globe as people wear items for so little and then toss them. Fashion is also a major contributor to water pollution. To make your Christmas sweater festive and sustainable, Hubbub urges consumers to consider purchasing a vintage sweater or swap with a friend.
