A Texas woman recently had to rush her 3-year-old dachshund to a vet after taking him to the groomers. Her dog, Taz, was in terrible condition and could have died had he not gotten emergency care so quickly.

Karen Bailor, Taz’s owner, explained, “He was very near death. If we had waited very much longer to take him to the vet, he would have perished. It was very chaotic. I looked at my dog and could tell he was in major distress by the way his body was hanging. He was very limp, his tail was down.”
Two vets told Bailor that her dachshund was suffering from an acute choking event which resulted in him being held in an oxygen chamber for three days. Since Bailor was informed that groomers do not need to be certified in any way, many lack the proper knowledge and qualifications. This can often lead to animals being mistreated or dangerously handled by groomers who do not really know what they are doing.
Bailor said, “I went back to them last week, and they have since terminated the groomer, and they offered to compensate me for the vet bills. I’ve learned a lot about doing homework and research on groomers.”
Thankfully, Taz will make a full recovery, but this is a stark reminder of how important it is to do your research and pick a professional groomer.
Unfortunately, grooming accidents are not uncommon occurrences. Animals have died from being left unattended in front of extremely hot dryers or even strangled to death while tied to a grooming table. To avoid things like this from happening you may want to contact a groomer and ask if you can watch the process of grooming (maybe they make house calls), check to see if they’re certified, find out if they have references, and ask them to dry your dog with a towel instead of a dryer.
