Do you have what it takes to call yourself a true animal lover? And I’m not talking about the everyday kind of animal lover that subscribes to Daily Puppy. I’m looking for the real-deal, to the core animal lover. Not a fair-weather friend to our feathered friends, but an incredibly compassionate person who does not let their two-legged stature get to their heads.
The kind of person who doesn’t discriminate against pure-bred or mutt, but loves anything with a wagging tail as much as (if not more!) than they love their own children. Still think you qualify? If you do, give yourself a nice big hug for me and all the creatures that are in your care. If you’re not certain if you meet these qualifications, then I urge you to scroll through this list as the first step to sorting out your creature-related confusion.
Trust me, no one is perfect and we’ve all made mistakes but, always remember: the choices we make can have a powerful impact on the world around us. Skimping on how you show love for animal in your diet, or the products you buy can have an impact that is WAY bigger than little ol’ you. So check out these examples of some confused “animal lovers” and see how you can make a subtle change in your life to show animals how much you REALLY do love them!
1. The Rabbit Lover Who Wears Angora Sweaters
Angora comes from the fur of rabbits that are known for being especially soft and fluffy. However, the method of getting fur from these rabbits to make sweaters is anything but. An undercover investigation from PETA revealed some pretty horrible things about the angora industry, particularly how angora rabbits are abused for their fur.
2. The Self-Proclaimed Animal Enthusiast Who Chomps Cheeseburgers
When you think about it, the division between the animals we love as pets and the ones we see as meat is a rather arbitrary differentiation. The reality is, the animals we consider “food” are just as capable of feeling pain and fear as the ones we welcome into our homes. A true animal lover can feel compassion for all living creatures, not just the ones we traditionally call pets.
3. A Cat-Lover Who Also Loves L’Oréal Cosmetics
This confused animal lover probably isn’t aware of L’Oréal’s animal testing policies…in which case they should definitely check out this article! But, long-story short, cosmetics testing on animals is a cruel practice that is not required by any federal laws or regulations and many studies have shown it’s not even effective at showing manufacturers how products will react to human skin and organs. So if you love animals, you should definitely make the switch to these cruelty-free cosmetic brands.
4. The Leather Bag Connoisseur Who Has a Pet Lizard
Leather, like angora wool, is a product that is made at the expense of animals who have been deemed high-end commodities by the fashion industry. In some countries, species of lizards are poached for their skins. No matter how you look at it, putting your phone and wallet in the skin of a dead animal doesn’t exactly jive with the “animal-lover” mentality.
5. The Dog-Lover Who Takes Family to the Elephant Circus
As this dog so aptly expresses…COME ON HUMAN! Circuses are some of the largest enterprises for animal abuse. If you love your dog, you should definitely extend that compassion and care to animals that are starved and beaten into performing tricks and STOP funding this cruelty by going to see shows. You would never treat your pet that way if they didn’t sit on command!
So now that you’ve seen these crazy examples, go spread your unconditional love for all animals by sticking to OR adopting a cruelty-free lifestyle. Trust me, all the love you show for animals, they will show right back…
