In the Gulf of California, this humpback whale got stuck inside a fishing net and couldn’t maneuver her way out until these rescuers arrived to save the day. The team at Sea Shepherd Conservation Society had the idea to gently tie a line around her nose to get close enough to free her from the fishing net. Although it took them hours of strategic planning and patience, they finally set her free!
Whales are among some of the most intelligent and dynamic creatures on Earth. Sadly, many whales and other marine creatures find themselves entangled in fishing nets, many of whom likely die of starvation, infections, and respiratory issues as a result. Luckily, there are some wonderful humans like those at Sea Shepherd Conservation Society who care about marine animals and do their best to save them!

For decades, even after whaling ceased, humpback whales have faced challenges to their survival, ranging from ship strikes to warming oceans and Climate change, says Sara Amundson, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund.
The Biden Administration took a significant step to protect humpback whales that are now listed under the Endangered Species Act. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NFMS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Commerce departments have finalized a rule to protect ocean habitats used by humpback whales.
