Taking vacations isn’t just for humans, as a rescue cat named Winston proved when he joined his family for a weekend getaway at an Airbnb. A TikTok video posted by user @winston.naughtypaws on April 23 shows the cat tucked away in an overnight bag, garnering over 3.2 million views and leaving the internet in hysterics.

While the caption on the video led many viewers to believe Winston was an unintended stowaway, his human Emily explained to Newsweek that the caption was just a playful joke. The family had to leave their home for a weekend due to repairs, and Winston had to come along.

Pet Relocation conducted a survey that found most traveling pets are dogs, but many pet owners are willing to change their travel plans to better accommodate their pets. In fact, 90 percent of pet owners said they would consider altering their original plans, and 60 percent stated that their pet’s safety is the most crucial factor when planning to travel with them. However, 40 percent of respondents noted that finding pet-friendly accommodations is often the most challenging part.

Emily, from Atlanta, shared that the internet was under the impression that Winston had secretly climbed into her bag. She said, “We were just in a neighborhood over as we had to leave due to repairs in our apartment. So, we had to take Winston with us too. I didn’t expect the video to go so viral.”

Winston is quite comfortable with various modes of travel, including cars and planes, making him an ideal travel companion. Emily added, “He travels surprisingly well. We previously moved him down to Georgia from Massachusetts via car, and he did great. He also recently flew on an airplane for the first time.”

The TikTok video generated over 502,000 views and hundreds of comments in just a few days. Commenters made jokes about Winston joining the family for their trip, with one person saying, “It’s a family vacation now,” and another quipping, “Guess you could say the cat’s out of the bag.” This heartwarming story highlights the importance of considering our pets’ needs and preferences when planning vacations, ensuring that the entire family can enjoy a safe and memorable trip together.
