While animals who happen to be missing a limb (or even two) obviously have to face certain disadvantages in their lives that their four-legged counterparts do not, they are more than capable of living life to the full and enjoying every moment! In the eleven-second YouTube clip above, we meet Shelley, a three-year-old black cat who was born with the rare problem of having no paw on her left hind leg.
Dr. William Snell, a surgeon with BluePearl Veterinary Partners’ Waltham, Mass. hospital, hopes that she can soon be fitted with an effective prosthesis. He said, “She’s a good candidate for a prosthetic leg because she’s young and healthy. I’d really like to give her the opportunity to run and jump better.” Shelley has already gone through the process of being X-rayed and measured in preparation for the prosthesis surgery.
Susanna Finn, her foster mom and adoption counselor with Black Cat Rescue, has described her as an extremely playful and loving companion … if a little on the pudgy side! She said, “She’s a terrific cat who loves snuggling and being around people. We want to do everything we can to improve her quality of life. She’s going to be a wonderful pet for a lucky person.”
