There is no doubt about it, Maty is one incredible dog. Maty was found abandoned with her litter mates when they were three weeks old. They were brought the the Humane Society of Central Oregon in Bend, Oregon. Unfortunately, Maty had already contracted a pretty serious staph infection in one of her back legs. The infection was eating away the tendons and muscles, so vets decided to amputate the leg.
This disability hasn’t slowed Maty down one bit. The Australian shepherd mix not only gets around without a problem, but she now competes in frisbee competitions and is quite the agile girl. She is the first 3-legged dog to qualify and compete in two Skyhoundz Worlds Canine Disc Dog Championships.
But that isn’t all Maty is known for. This amazing dog takes in litters of stray, feral kittens and cares for them like they are her own.
“We knew Maty was good with the kitties, and they would go up to her,” says Lynne Ouchida, community outreach coordinator of the Humane Society of Central Oregon and Maty’s mom. “Since Maty is missing her left leg, when she lays on her right leg, she has a nook (where her left leg once was) and it creates a cradle. They lay in that spot against her belly.”
Maty watches over the kittens for about two weeks, and her mom feeds the babies with a syringe. While Maty’s mom feeds the kittens, she is right there, cleaning them off.
As if Maty wasn’t already busy enough, she also serves as a goodwill ambassador for the HSCO. When she’s not competing in frisbee tournaments and taking care of kittens, Maty is out and about visiting schools and groups. She teaches the public all about responsible pet care, animal safety, other animal-related topics, and how awesome a three-legged, tripod, dog can be! Maty proves that rescue dogs are the coolest dogs around!
