Meet Opie, the brave and lovable bull terrier-pit bull mix who has lived a truly transformative life. Rescued in Ontario, California, Opie was just two weeks old and battling a dangerous infection from a tied-up tail.

Jill Ferris, Opie’s adoptive mom, recalls the heartbreaking situation when she found him, “Someone had cruelly tried to dock his tail by tying it in a knot.” Traditionally, certain dog breeds have had their tails docked, a controversial practice still prevalent in the U.S. The risks include pain, excessive bleeding, and infections. Recently, avoiding tail docking is gaining favor as pet owners appreciate their pets’ natural appearances.

The Ontario Veterinary Hospital performed a life-saving surgery on Opie. After a few weeks of constant care, Opie was ready for a new home, and that’s when Jill’s husband, Ron, couldn’t resist his charm.

Jill wasn’t initially thrilled about adding a new family member, but Opie soon won her heart. “I became very protective of him. He has been our four-legged pride and joy for six years now,” she gushes. Opie is a joy in their lives, enjoying the morning sun, playing in his kiddie pool, and being fantastic with their other pets, Scarlett the terrier and Finn the cat.
