Photographer Rita Earl Blackwell recently shed light on a heart-wrenching issue that plagues animal shelters across the United States. In a moving video posted on her Instagram and later shared on TikTok, she paid tribute to 12 dogs who were killed due to a lack of space at the shelter where she volunteers.
In the video, Blackwell remembers these dogs who, despite their best efforts, couldn’t find a new forever home. Their stories serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis in animal shelters, where resources and space are strained to the limit. “Holding space for my sweet little friends. Using all of this heartbreak to fuel and inspire more love, compassion, and caring during this terrible crisis we are in,” Blackwell wrote in her heartfelt Instagram post. She urges viewers to shift their focus from the sadness they may feel to the animals who need their help the most.
Rita Earl Blackwell volunteers at a shelter in the Los Angeles area where the difficult decision to kill some dogs due to a lack of space was made. The dogs she honored in her video had one thing in common: they all experienced love and affection, even if it was for a tragically brief time, from Blackwell and her fellow volunteers.

The video has touched the hearts of many, gaining significant attention on social media platforms. Posted on TikTok by superfly.md, it has been viewed 175,000 times at the time of writing. This powerful message and visual tribute have resonated with viewers, amassing over 20,000 likes on TikTok alone.
Sadly, the situation depicted in Blackwell’s video is far from an isolated case. Across the United States, animal shelters are grappling with an alarming rise in the number of pets being surrendered. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 6.3 million pets are relinquished to shelters annually, averaging about 17,260 animals per day. The numbers are staggering, and they point to a systemic issue that urgently needs attention.
While animal shelters are tirelessly working to minimize kill rates through adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation, it’s a challenging battle. Space constraints, lack of resources, and an ever-increasing number of homeless animals make the situation dire in many shelters.
Although these dogs may not have found their new forever homes, their memory lives on thanks to Blackwell’s touching video and the powerful message it conveys. Blackwell ends her video with a plea: “Please consider adopting your next dog.”
