Two brothers in North Port, Florida found themselves behind bars, facing charges of aggravated animal cruelty, according to reports. The charges stem from a gruesome incident in which a Pitbull puppy had its ears cropped without anesthesia, resulting in excessive blood loss. The shocking incident came to light after a tip from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
In July, PETA submitted a tip to the North Port Police Department that included a video capturing the horrendous procedure. The footage revealed the small Pitbull puppy undergoing ear cropping, a practice widely condemned by animal welfare organizations and veterinarians. What made the situation even more distressing was the absence of anesthesia during the procedure, causing the puppy immense pain and suffering.
The video provided undeniable evidence of the Pitbull puppy’s terrible experience. It showed the puppy enduring the ear-cropping procedure without any form of anesthesia or pain relief. As a result, the puppy lost a significant amount of blood during the process.
In response to the tip provided by PETA, the North Port Police Department acted swiftly. On Monday, officers executed a search warrant at the residence located in the 4000 block of Baynes Road in North Port, directly connected to the incident. The two brothers, Merald and Matthew Onyemaechi, were taken into custody and subsequently charged with aggravated animal cruelty. Furthermore, officers removed five dogs from the home, including the Pitbull puppy that had undergone the procedure, to ensure their safety.
Merald and Matthew Onyemaechi now find themselves detained in the Sarasota County Jail, with a bond set at $50,000. Additionally, they are prohibited from housing or owning animals.
