People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India celebrated the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) historic lunar landing by delivering a rocket-shaped vegan cake to mark the occasion, according to The Indian Express. The event, which saw the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the uncharted lunar south pole, not only made India the fourth nation to reach the moon but also highlighted the country’s commitment to innovative space exploration.
Crafted by the vegan bakery, Crave by Leena, located in Bengaluru, the cake was a masterpiece of culinary artistry. Fashioned from the best vegan ingredients, it boasted a blend of chocolate truffle and blue buttercream. This delectable creation emphasized ISRO’s monumental achievement while simultaneously promoting a vegan lifestyle. A tribute to both space exploration and ethical choices, the cake truly embodied the spirit of progress.
PETA India’s gesture extended beyond simple celebration. It was a recognition of ISRO’s decision to abstain from animal testing, setting a commendable example by opting to send a humanoid robot into space for the Gaganyaan project. This decision aligns with PETA’s unwavering advocacy against animal cruelty and the use of animals in experiments.
Monica Chopra, PETA India’s Manager of Fashion, Media, and Celebrity Projects, conveyed the significance of the moment in a press release: “India is the first to land on the moon’s south pole, and vegetarian eating also originated in India. Our nation now has the largest population of vegetarians in the world and has seen an astounding 360 percent increase in the number of vegans in 10 years, so there’s a lot for us to be proud of.”
The vegan cake was a celebration of India’s dual achievements – the successful lunar landing and the country’s deep-rooted history of vegetarianism. As PETA India’s symbolic offering made its way to ISRO, it underscored the undeniable connection between ethical choices, innovation, and progress.
Moreover, PETA India seized the opportunity to highlight the ethical and environmental implications of consuming animal-derived products. The organization shed light on the suffering animals endure in the egg and dairy industries, where living conditions are often inhumane. Chickens are cramped in confined spaces, while male chicks and calves face inhumane fates due to their inability to produce eggs or milk. The meat industry, sustained largely by the dairy sector, has its own set of ethical and environmental concerns.
