When this Tiktoker rescued a Betta fish, he was so scared and wouldn’t come out from his hiding spot in his small bowl. A concerned mother had reached out to @fishiies on TikTok, explaining that the Beta was her 15-year-old daughter’s, but she could no longer take care of him. “My daughter got him at her dad’s house and hasn’t been taking good care. she is okay letting him go but I’m worried he’s on his last leg,” said her mother.

After coordinating a time to meet up and finally seeing Rocket’s home, @fishiies was shocked. The bowl was filthy and was not being cleaned properly. He was also very skinny and looked like he hadn’t eaten in weeks. It was clear that Rocket needed a new fish tank to thrive. After throwing away his old fish bowl, she sets up a hospital tank for Rocket. After feeding him shrimp and blood worms, he finally came out from hiding to explore his new home!

Betta fish are a popular pet as they are visually beautiful and believed to be low-maintenance “starter pets.” However, fishes are one of the most neglected pets. From failing to clean their tank properly to forgetting to feed them, many pet fish die due to the stress of these conditions. @fishiies thanked the mother for bringing Rocket to her rescue and doing the right thing.

If you want a fish as a companion, you can adopt one in need of a home instead of buying one at a pet store. Fish are the single most abused group of animals across the globe. Trillions are killed every year by the food industry and the pet trade. For Betta fish especially, many who love these vibrant fish are unaware of how horrific the fish pet trade truly is. From fish farms to the pet store to your home, these fish endure a harsh and inhumane journey. Bettas are bred in empty, unsanitary tanks that often contain the floating bodies of other dead bettas. The fish who die in the process seem to be the lucky ones. The ones who do survive are treated carelessly and shipped in small bags with barely enough water to cover their bodies.

Due to misconceptions about fish, bettas often can’t even escape mistreatment upon being purchased and taken into a home. While it’s true that they don’t need as much care as other types of fish, these are still complex creatures who need more than just a small empty vase to thrive. They are naturally curious and love to explore, so having a larger, more enriching tank is essential to their well-being.

You can find needy animals on Petfinder.com or contact your local animal shelter and ask it to notify you when it has fish available for adoption.
