Getting stranded, or beaching, can happen as a result of sickness, injury, old age, bad weather, navigation errors, or hunting too close to shore. Some whale and dolphin species find themselves victims of mass strandings. No matter how they end up on the beach, humans need to find the cause and help them get back to safety.

While returning from a kayaking tour at Pelican Point near Walvis Bay and Swakopmund in Namibia, Namib_Naude encountered a young Benguella Dolphin stranded on the beach. The reason for the stranding is unclear, but the dolphin was likely chasing fish too close to shore. Benguella Dolphins are native to the southwestern coast of Africa and are not baby Orcas. Naude assessed the situation and decided to return the dolphin to the ocean, gently carrying it back to the water. The dolphin swam away strongly, and Ocean Conservation Namibia monitored the beaches for days without any further sightings, suggesting the dolphin survived.
