Industrial farming practices often overshadow the well-being of animals. But, farm sanctuaries stand as symbols of both compassion and change. These sanctuaries provide a haven for animals rescued from neglect, abuse, and slaughter, offering them a chance at a peaceful and fulfilling life. Behind every sanctuary is a dedicated founder whose passion and perseverance have brought these sanctuaries to life. Their journeys are not just about creating safe spaces for animals, but also about igniting a movement of empathy and awareness.

Pam Ahern gives all the glory to one pig, the pig who helped her realize her dream of starting a farm sanctuary! Edgar Allan Pig was the first animal that Pam connected with. They quickly became best friends and she would walk him in the park, often getting stopped by passersby. She realized the impact that animals have on people and vice versa. This inspired her to quit her job and devote her life to saving animals. Now, she lives with 450 animals on a farm in Australia. Here, she learns about each animal’s quirks and works to give them the best life possible.

Dan McKernan was at a crossroads when his old family farm was left with no one in it. He could sell it, or he could put it to use. So, he started Barn Sanctuary in Chelsea, Michigan. It all began in 2016 when Dan was working in tech and his dad reached out to him to ask if he wanted to do something with the farm or sell it to a big corporation. With a love for animals, and a want to keep the 140-year-old property in his family, Dan started fundraising, educated himself on animals, moved home, and quit his job. Now, the sanctuary has over 110 animals that have been rescued from abuse, neglect, and mistreatment.

Renee King-Sonnen and her husband Tommy Sonnen used to own a cattle ranch called Sonnen Ranch in Angleton, Texas. When Renee went vegan, she realized the impact their cattle ranch was having on these animals and she wanted no part of their slaughter. Slowly, she convinced her husband to not sell the cows to slaughterhouses — but to her! She raised money and turned their land into Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. Then, Tommy turned vegan too!

Christopher Vane moved to southwest Florida to be closer to his parents and leave his career in real estate in 2014. That’s when he thought about his love for animals and decided to open a farm sanctuary to give animals a safe, happy place to call home. With that, Little Bear Sanctuary was born!

At the Odd Man Inn, every animal is welcome. Their story doesn’t start with Herbie the goat, but he’s an excellent example of their work. Josh and Wendy were looking for a tractor when they saw him listed on Craigslist at just two months old and knew that they had to go get him. He was orphaned and a little bit of a troublemaker, so they knew he would fit right in with the 84 other animals they had rescued. Not only do these animals live on the property outside of their house, but Wendy and Josh can sometimes find pigs, cows, and other animals wandering in their home.

The stories of these five farm sanctuary founders are a testament to the power of individual action in the face of adversity. Each founder’s journey shows the profound impact that dedication and compassion can have on the lives of countless animals. Through their efforts, they have not only provided sanctuary to animals in need but have also inspired a global community to rethink our relationship with farmed animals.
