Dallas Shelter Fumes After Dog is Given Up After 7 Years

Rooney, a 7-year-old Dogue de Bordeaux, was discarded by his family of seven years due to the arrival of a new baby. The Dallas shelter where he was left to fend for himself amidst overcrowded and strained conditions shares a mix of sadness and outrage over his plight. Despite being a cherished member of his family, Rooney was surrendered to an overwhelmed local animal control shelter, where the grim reality of space shortages and the looming threat of euthanasia hung heavy in the air. Neutered, house-trained, and amicable with other dogs, Rooney’s only crime was being unable to fit into his family’s changing dynamics.

Transporter Ricky, affiliated with Dallas shelter Lone Star Dog Ranch & Dog Ranch Rescue, stepped in as Rooney’s guardian angel. Paying a $17 fee to liberate him from uncertainty, Ricky whisked Rooney away to safety. However, the staff at the rescue center couldn’t contain their sorrow upon witnessing Rooney’s circumstances.

A post on Lone Star Dog Ranch & Dog Ranch Rescue’s Facebook page encapsulated their frustration. Rooney’s story sheds light on a broader issue: the staggering number of pets abandoned in the United States each year. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an average of 17,260 pets enter shelters daily, amounting to a staggering 6.3 million annually.

However, amidst the bleak statistics, shelters strive to enact positive change. Through adoption initiatives, spaying and neutering programs, and behavioral rehabilitation efforts, they aim to minimize euthanasia rates and provide second chances to animals like Rooney.

Since arriving at Dog Ranch Rescue on April 11, Rooney has battled bouts of stress-induced diarrhea, underscoring the toll of his abandonment. Currently in isolation as a precautionary measure against potential illnesses contracted at the previous shelter, Rooney is slowly regaining a sense of security in his newfound haven.
