The Maryland Zoo is mourning the loss of Mr. Greedy, an African penguin who played a critical role in preserving his endangered species. At 33 years old, he was the zoo’s oldest penguin, far surpassing the typical 18-year lifespan of African penguins. Mr. Greedy, who arrived at the zoo’s Penguin Coast exhibit in 1992, was a cornerstone of the zoo’s efforts to protect the species from extinction.
Shortly after his arrival, he was paired with a mate, Mrs. Greedy, as part of the Species Survival Plan. Although initially intended to be together for just a few years, their bond—and genetic significance—kept them together for life. Over the years, the couple produced several offspring, contributing to a remarkable 230 descendants.
Known for his protective nature, Mr. Greedy always looked after Mrs. Greedy and their chicks, ensuring they were well-cared for. His contributions to the survival of African penguins were invaluable, according to Jen Kottyan, the zoo’s bird curator. Sadly, Mr. Greedy was euthanized on August 27 after his health declined due to old age.
