Sydney’s Sea Life Aquarium witnessed an unprecedented farewell as Magic and his fellow gentoo penguins mourned the passing of Sphen. Sphen, who was known for his same-sex relationship with Magic, died of natural causes just shy of his 12th birthday.
Penguin keeper Renee Howell, who observed the couple’s unique bond from the start, described their influence on global conversations about equality as “immeasurable.” Howell noted that the relationship between Sphen and Magic began with traditional courtship rituals, including exchanging pebbles—a hallmark of gentoo penguin bonding.
Sphen and Magic gained international attention in 2018 for their same-sex partnership. Over the years, they successfully raised two chicks and were known for their shared parenting responsibilities, dividing their duties equally. This arrangement highlighted their remarkable connection.
When Sphen passed away, aquarium staff facilitated a heartfelt farewell by showing Magic his partner’s body. This allowed Magic to understand that Sphen would not be returning. The emotional moment was marked by a chorus of penguin songs, a testament to Sphen’s impact and the deep bond between the two.
