The statistics about the pet overpopulation crisis are staggering. There are about 70 million stray animals living in the U.S. and of those, only about six to eight million cats and dogs enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters every year, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Only about three to four million cats and dogs are adopted from shelters each year … and often dogs and cats are brought back to the shelter after being surrendered by their guardians.
Sadly, that’s exactly what happened to James Bean the cat, not just once, but five times. The calico cat was returned to the shelter five times for being “too demanding.” But then Imgur user ncarbell adopted him – and this time for good. We just love a happy ending!
Are you thinking of adding your very own James Bean to your crew? There are thousands of deserving cats waiting for their forever homes at an animal shelter near you. Choosing to adopt rather than shop for a new pet helps to reduce the homeless pet population and can help free up more space in a shelter for other animals who desperately need it. Fostering an animal is another great way to help animals in need!
Even if you cannot foster or adopt, you can still help kittens. Participate in your local trap-neuter-release program to ensure that no unwanted kittens are born or use your social media accounts to raise awareness about the importance of adoption and spaying or neutering your pets.

I have a tuxedo cat, and her nature is very similar. Her previous owner gave her to me because she was always in her face. Dottie is older now–and was injured (and survived). She has limited mobility, but she manages. Twice a day we have a dedicated "mommy and me" time where I pet her and brush her. Her purr machine is magnificent. She is my alarm clock–makes sure I\’m up by 5:00 AM. When I\’m having a bad day, she\’s there…in my face. And yes, that is just fine.
I would have thought being loving, gorgeous, and sweet were GOOD qualities!!! Not an excuse to be returned.
