With the demand for vegan food options higher than ever, the Food Safety and Standards Authority Of India has created new vegan standards as well as a flashy new vegan logo to help people know what they are purchasing.
The new logo is a green V, used to signify that a product is a certified vegan food option. This is exciting news for vegans everywhere as this is the first time that the Government of India has recognized vegan products.
The rules stated that “The food products or ingredients to be called vegan shall not have involved animal testing for evaluating the safety of the final product or ingredient and shall not contain any animal-derived GMOs or products prepared using an animal-derived gene for manufacturing the ingredients or products.”
Vegans on Twitter were ecstatic about this new development and tweeted their excitement about the new logo.
Arun Singhal, the Chief Executive Officer of FSSAI, said, “There is a movement for veganism. There are many people who are allergic to milk and want to avoid animal products completely. For them, we have the vegan food logo that will help people to make their choice.”
Because this recognition of vegan products is a huge leap for India, it will hopefully make it easier for vegan Indian brands to shine and gain visibility.
