In 1869, Cornelius Swartout of Troy, New York received a patent for a “device to bake waffles” and breakfast hasn’t been the same since.


Throughout the world, however, some form of waffles has been eaten since the Middle Ages. In ancient Greece, pancakes were prepared between two metal plates over a fire. They were even sold from carts as street food. In 1620, the pilgrims brought Dutch “wafles” to America. In fact, the word “waffle” is Dutch for “wafer.” It would take another hundred years for the word to get the second f and be spelled the way we know it today. Thomas Jefferson even brought a waffle iron back from France with him. In the 1950s, when convenience food became a thing, frozen waffles hit the supermarkets for the first time and restaurant chains featuring waffles started to pop up as well.

Typically, waffles are made from leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two patterned plates to form a characteristic shape, size, and surface impression. There are many types of waffles all over the world. The type of waffles that can be created is limited only by our imaginations.
