According to a report by Innova Market Insights, plant-based products and ingredients are becoming more and more popular. This is more than likely due to the fact that consumers are growing increasingly more interested in sustainability, their overall health, and ethics.
Just for a little deeper look into this report, Innova found that within the food and beverage market, plant-based product claims accelerated to a 62% growth nationwide from the year 2013 to 2017. The biggest increases were found in industries involving plant proteins, herbs and seasonings, food coloring, sweeteners, and active botanicals.
Another market within the plant-based food realm that has really taken off is the alternative dairy industry. Director of Innovation at Innova, Lu Ann Williams, says that this market has benefitted off of the vegan trend as traditional dairy brands are beginning to create non-dairy options. It seems that by 2018, dairy alternatives, especially non-dairy beverages, will be dominating the market, bringing in roughly 16.3 billion US dollars.
In addition, the alternative meat market is also stirring up a lot of commotion. With consumers becoming increasingly more interested in cutting out their meat intake significantly or all together, global sales in this industry are expected to bring in 4.2 billion US dollars in sales by 2022.
There seems to be a general shift towards a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle as of late, as well as a growing concern for animal welfare. In direct correlation, plant-based product development has seen an 11% yearly growth rate since 2013!
