Get Out! This New Candy Shop Offers Vegan ‘Squid Ink’ Ice Cream!

untitled-78

Is there any ingredient left out there that hasn’t been made plant-based by some innovative chef out there? We have vegan artisan cheese shops, plant-based meats, vegan egg scrambles, and more available to purchase. And now, residents of Austin can purchase squid ink ice cream from Yummi Joy, a new candy shop in Texas!

Originally, Yummi Joy was called “Toy Joy”, and was simply a toy shop for children. However, Toy Joy combined forces with the vegan ice cream shop Sweet Ritual. Now, Yummi Joy is open at 409 West Second Streer from 9 am to 10 pm Monday-Thursday, and 9 am to 11 pm Friday, and 9 am to 9 pm Saturday and Sunday.

While there are many different flavors and treats we’d love to sample, we were most intrigued by the squid ink ice cream, and reached out to Yummi Joy to learn more!

“The Squid Ink is our signature flavor — it is a sorbet with a coffee and chocolate flavor derived from activated charcoal. We have been crafting vegan affogatos with the squid ink — a small serving of the squid ink in a cup, draped by a shot of our signature Little City Messenger Espresso. Served with a spoon, it is absolutely a delight,” Skylar Saboda, who refers to themselves as the potions master and head sweets enthusiast for Yummi Joy, told us.

Yummi Joy currently also offers the colorful pink Unicorn Poop pictured above, which is a coconut-based ice cream that is filled with rainbow sprinkles and accidentally vegan-friendly Skittles.

“Another favorite of mine is the cashew milk-based Matcha green tea,” says Skylar. “It captures the perfect amount of sweetness and vegetal traditional Matcha flavor.”

Yummi Joy ice creams can be served on top of vegan handcrafted waffle cones from Konery in Brooklyn, NY, and come in a variety of flavors, like gluten-free French Vanilla, Birthday Cake, Lavender, Cinnamon Brown Sugar, and Matcha.

Yummi Joy truly aims to create a whimsical space for the kid in everyone.
