There once was a time when vegan fast food meant little more than ketchup on a bun. For an industry that prides itself on speed, the rate at which fast food has accommodated vegan diners has been surprisingly sluggish. Still, there are few things more motivating than competition. As more and more diners flex into plant-based eating, fast food has followed suit, with Panda Express and Carl’s Jr. both having added vegan options to their menu.
Now, long-time vegan accomplice Chipotle has officially joined the club. While the company’s vegan sofritas are still very much on the menu, the fast casual chain now offers two new pre-constructed meal options: a Vegan Bowl and a Vegetarian Bowl, in each and every one of its restaurants across the United States. The bowls are part of Chipotle’s “Plant-Powered” Lifestyle Bowl options. The chain’s Lifestyle Bowls series is meant to complement different eating lifestyles, offering the Keto, Paleo, Whole30, and “double protein” bowls last year.
The plant-based vegan bowl will contain the company’s signature Sofritas, along with brown rice, lettuce, black beans, and two tasty salsas. The Vegetarian Bowl is filled with fajita veggies, pinto beans, brown rice, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole.
Yes, the vegan bowl has no guacamole. Yes, someone should write a letter.
It’s genuinely pleasing news from Chipotle. While plenty of big food companies have hopped aboard the vegan train, Chipotle has always been responsive to their plant-based customers. They’ve even encouraged customers to try their plant-based offerings with free food! Still, it’s exciting to watch them show their support in such an official way.
