The climate crisis is escalating, and according to Ana Toni, CEO of COP30, it is “our biggest war.” As the UN Climate Summit (COP30) approaches in November 2025, global efforts to address Climate change are faltering. With over 200 countries preparing to meet in Belém, Brazil, only a handful have submitted plans to mitigate the impacts of climate breakdown, as required by the Paris Agreement. In fact, fewer than 30 countries have produced updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the cornerstone of global climate agreements.
The urgency of the situation is apparent. Global temperatures have now surpassed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the first time, a threshold previously considered a “safe” limit to prevent the worst impacts of Climate change. However, geopolitical tensions, ongoing military conflicts, and economic instability are diverting attention away from climate action. These distractions are compounded by the reluctance of major fossil-fuel-producing countries to commit to more aggressive emissions reductions, with China and the US notably lagging in their climate pledges.
Despite these challenges, COP30 will be a crucial moment for world leaders to either step up or further hinder progress. Countries like Brazil, which has been leading the charge in climate action, are advocating for more ambitious NDCs. However, achieving meaningful reductions in emissions and financing for developing nations remains a significant hurdle. The disparity in financial commitments and the lack of concrete plans to phase out fossil fuels are major roadblocks.
It is critical that the global community prioritizes climate action over other distractions. If we are to secure a livable future for the next generations, world leaders must take bold steps, not just in words, but in measurable actions. Now is the time to demand that governments put climate at the forefront of their agendas and invest in the green technologies of the future.
