The world is running out of time to prevent catastrophic Climate change. According to a new report covered by The Guardian, scientists have issued a stark warning: at current levels of carbon Pollution, the planet’s remaining “carbon budget” — the amount of CO₂ we can emit while still having a good chance of limiting warming to 1.5°C — will be used up in just two years.

Global emissions hit a new record in 2024, and unless radical cuts are made, the international 1.5°C climate target is likely to be breached soon after. Once passed, we would face even more intense weather disasters, rising sea levels, and ecological collapse. And it’s not just about hitting targets — every fraction of a degree matters. Limiting warming to 1.7°C instead of 2.7°C could save millions from suffering, particularly the poorest and most vulnerable communities.

The research, published in Earth System Science Data and produced by 60 climate scientists, paints a grim picture: the Earth’s heat imbalance has increased by 25% over the last decade, and sea level rise is now accelerating, doubling to 4mm per year. Ocean heat, glacier melt, and fossil fuel demand are all rising — and pushing the planet toward unmanageable change.

Despite pledges made at climate summits like Cop28 in Dubai, there’s little sign of the promised fossil fuel phase-out. Instead, coal and gas use continues to climb, turbocharging the crisis.

According to Prof Joeri Rogelj from Imperial College London, while the best time for action was decades ago, now is the next best time. Immediate action could still reduce harm — but delay will cost us the livable climate we once took for granted.

We can’t afford more “business as usual.” Cut meat, ditch plastic, pressure governments, and Support clean energy solutions. Every choice counts — and every second matters.
