Zoologist Found Guilty of Bestiality, Animal Abuse, and Possession of Child Exploitation Material Charges

Adam Britton

In the Northern Territory Supreme Court, Adam Robert Corden Britton, a 52-year-old expert on crocodiles in Darwin, was revealed as a serial animal abuser. His identity had been concealed from the public before this due to the heinous nature of his crimes, which posed a risk to his fair trial rights, as reported by the NT News.

Britton recently pled guilty to 60 heinous charges including bestiality, possession of child exploitation material, and animal cruelty. These charges included torture, rape, and killing of at least 39 dogs.

During court, Chief Justice Michael Grant granted permission for Sheriff’s officers to be excused and allowed security guards to remain outside the courtroom, sparing them from exposure to the complete details of the appalling crimes. The facts shared throughout the case, including Britton’s own words, had animals referred to as “f–k toys” and detailed the inside of the torture room that he had on his property.

Britton’s terrible acts date back to 2014, according to Crown prosecutor Marty Aust. At this time, the zoologist began sexually assaulting his own Swiss-Sheppard dogs, Ursa and Bolt. During these terrible acts, Britton possessed a Ph.D. in zoology and served as a Senior Research Associate at Charles Darwin University. Additionally, he co-led a crocodilian research and consulting enterprise called Big Gecko, where he maintained saltwater crocodiles as personal pets on his premises.

Between late 2020 and early 2022, Britton found 42 dogs through online postings. Most of whom he tortured, sexually assaulted, and killed. Additionally, he shared stories and videos of his exploits online with others, sharing the methods he used to acquire, kill, and dispose of the dogs. In another shocking twist, Britton’s laptop had 15 files of child abuse material.

The zoologist plead guilty to 37 counts of animal cruelty causing serious harm or death, 10 counts of raping or attempting to rape dogs, four counts of possessing or transmitting child abuse material, animal cruelty, breaching duty of care to his own dogs, and offensively using a carriage service. Britton is currently in custody and will be sentenced later.
