Golfer Who Beat Goose to Death Charged with Animal Cruelty

A golfer was charged with animal cruelty after he beat a Canada goose to death with a golf club. The incident took place at a golf course located in New York state. The goose had been struck with a ball when the man decided to “put it out of its misery” according to witnesses. A veterinarian who examined the deceased goose said that the creature was probably stunned and would most likely have survived.

Witnesses describe the vicious attack on the bird. They said that after the ball struck the bird, the man approached it making remarks about “putting it out of its misery.” He then struck the goose several times with one of his golf clubs. After walking away, he noticed the creature was still alive, then returned and delivered another blow which killed it.

After this incident, someone contacted the police. Law enforcement officials from the county’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and from the state Department of Environmental Conservation both sent personnel in response to the call. A post-mortem examination of the goose was carried out by a veterinarian. Horrifyingly, X-rays performed after the goose’s death showed that the savage beating had separated the bird’s head from its spine.

An official from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said that, although the golfers did not know the extent to which the animal was injured, other options were available to them. Instead, they could have contacted the police or wildlife officials, or taken the goose to a veterinarian.

The police arrested the goose’s killer. He will be charged with a Class A misdemeanor. Arraignment will take place on September 12th.
