A recent viral video shows how quickly a harmless looking moment with wildlife can turn dangerous. In the clip, a woman leans out of her car window in a national park to touch a bison after feeding it. Seconds later, the animal snaps its head, and her arm bends in a way no elbow should. According to Michael Muir, the incident is just one example of a growing problem fueled by social media and poor judgment.
Bison may look calm, but they are among the most unpredictable animals in North America. Adults can weigh up to a ton and sprint faster than most humans. Every year, visitors are injured after getting too close, often ignoring posted warnings meant to protect both people and animals. Feeding or touching wild animals puts everyone at risk and teaches them to associate humans with food.
This behavior also harms the ecosystem inside national parks. When animals lose their natural fear, they become more aggressive and more likely to be euthanized after encounters go wrong. That outcome hurts the planet and undermines the purpose of protected land. Parks exist to safeguard animals, not to serve as backdrops for viral content.
Spending time in nature supports mental and physical health, but it comes with responsibility. Respecting distance rules and following leave no trace principles help protect the Earth and preserve these spaces for future generations. Observing wildlife from afar keeps people safe and allows animals to behave naturally.
Choosing compassion matters beyond the park gates too. A plant based lifestyle reduces pressure on land and wildlife habitats while supporting a healthier environment. Protecting animals starts with everyday choices and basic respect for the lives we share this planet with.
Let’s treat wildlife with care and choose actions that protect animals, the environment, and each other.
